Birding in Borneo I

We have been birding on the Malaysian side of Borneo and thanks to our excellent guide, Osman, kind driver, Julius, and trip organiser, Tommy from Borneo Eco Tours, we had a wonderful time in Sabah and were able to see 100+ bird species during our 4-night tour.

Day 1 Kota Kinabalu -I

@ Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre

Although we saw/heard quite a few birds in the Wetlands, the dense vegetation and dark shade didn't allow me to take photos as successfully as I'd wished.

Collard Kingfisher (these pics were taken at another location though)

This beautiful kingfisher is very vocal and we heard them everywhere but it was very difficult to spot in the jungle!

Yellow-vented Bulbul (also taken at another location ;;)

This bulbul is one of the most common birds in Kota Kinabalu, just like Brown-eared Bulbuls in Japan.

We had a lovely view of a Brahminy Kite.

Views from the canopy

I thought we were going to see open madflats there but KKWC has mangrove forests(jungle) in the middle of the city!

and some parts of the paths were like that!

The boardwalk
The tiny pebble-or-bubble-like-stuff on the ground is all whelks.

a crab

a huge wasps' nest!

mud bathing?
4 or 5 tortoises were kept in an enclosure by the centre.
